Steel and Glass Pivot Loft Door

A glass door that turns on its axis

The Steel and Glass Pivot Loft Door separates two rooms without shutting out the light. Instead of hinges on the side, the leaf turns on a pivot axis about 150 mm in from one edge, set into the floor and the head, so it opens both ways, closes by itself from any smaller angle and stays open at 90 degrees until you close it. The single full-height pane keeps the view through, and the slim steel leaf draws one clean line around it.

It is made for interior doorways. It has no lock, and we state no fire, sound or burglary rating for it.

Standard size and made to measure

The standard leaf is 1000 mm wide and 2400 mm high. It turns in the finished opening with gaps of about 6 mm at the sides and 10 to 15 mm at the top and bottom, so no wall frame is needed, and with the axis 150 mm from the edge the wide side leaves about 750 mm of clear passage when the leaf stands at 90 degrees. Every door is made to order, so you can also choose:

• a leaf from 700 to 1200 mm wide and 2000 to 2700 mm high, with a pivot set rated for its weight
• fluted or satin laminated glass instead of clear
• another handle length

Materials and construction

• Leaf: welded steel, 40 mm deep: stiles in 40 x 20 x 2 mm rectangular tube with the 20 mm face to the room, top and bottom rails in 80 x 40 x 2 mm tube that house the pivots
• Glass: VSG 55.2 (10.76 mm) clear laminated safety glass for the 1000 x 2400 mm leaf; VSG 44.2 (8.76 mm) for panes up to 2 m²
• Glazing: the pane sits on setting blocks and is held on both faces by screwed steel glazing beads with a glazing seal
• Hardware: concealed hydraulic pivot set rated for at least 100 kg, self-closing, holds open at 90 degrees, opens both ways
• Handle: 1200 mm steel bar on each face

Finish

The steel is primed and painted in one RAL colour of your choice; matt black (RAL 9005) as in the pictures is the house standard. Textured finishes are options priced in a quotation.

Floor, head and fitting

The bottom pivot sits about 30 mm deep in the finished floor, so the floor must be finished and level at that point and free of underfloor heating pipes. The top pivot is fixed into a load-bearing head: a concrete lintel, a steel or timber beam, or a steel or timber backing that your builder fits behind plasterboard. The door arrives glazed, with the pivot set, fixings and a fitting drawing, and is fitted by you or your builder.

Lead time and delivery

Each door is made to order. Products ordered in the shop are ready for collection within 7 weeks of your order, or delivered in Poland, Spain, Italy or the United Kingdom, or by courier in Germany, within 9 weeks, if our order confirmation reaches you by the end of the second working day after your order and you pay within 7 days of receiving it; if it reaches you later, these times run from the day your payment arrives.Collect your order free of charge from our workshop in Piotrowice, or choose delivery in Poland, Spain, Italy or the United Kingdom at the flat rate shown at checkout (for the UK, import VAT and duty are paid on arrival); delivery to other countries is by quotation.
