Is an attached or freestanding steel pergola better?

Question published Answer published 23 views
A wall-mounted pergola rests one side on a beam bolted to the house, so posts stand only along the outer edge of the patio and the area by the house stays clear. A freestanding one, like our pergola carport, stands on its own posts and can go anywhere in the garden. On an insulated wall we agree the beam fixing detail with the wall build-up before production, and where the wall should not carry the load we build a freestanding layout. Compare both pergola arrangements.
